YOUR GUIDE TO HAIR SCIENCE & TEXTURE

Philip Kingsley Trichologists (hair and scalp specialists) care about giving you the best head of hair possible.

Which is why our expert Trichologists have created this hub of information on your hair and scalp. Afterall, a Trichologist is to your hair and scalp what a dermatologist is to the skin on your face and body. Discover how to care for your hair type correctly, treat common hair care concerns and understand how your hair is built.

Hair Types & Textures

Here at Philip Kingsley, we avoid using terms like ‘normal’, ‘dry’ and ‘oily’ to categorise hair, because after all, what is ‘normal’ for one person may not be normal for another. Instead, we pioneered the technique of classifying hair according to four textures: Fine, Medium, Coarse and Natural Coiled Curls. Find out more about your hair texture and how to care for it in our hair texture guides.

Hair Growth

It’s very important to understand the hair growth cycle in order to recognize and understand many of the problems you can encounter with your hair, alongwith what you can do to help your hair thrive.

Hair Structure

Hair is a remarkable fibre. It is composed of keratin, a strong fibrous protein, and is built from cells similar to those of your skin. Find answers to your questions on how hair is built, what it needs and how you can get your best head of hair yet in our articles below.

Hair Facts & Myths

Did you know? The average number of hairs on the human scalp is 120,000 — although those with fine hair (such as many blondes) tend to have more, and those with coarse hair (such as many redheads) tend to have less... Find out more hair facts and myths that we bust to help you care better for your hair everyday and when experiencing a hair or scalp condition.

HAIR SCIENCE
FAQ'S

What is Trichology?

Trichology is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair. Clinical trichology is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the human hair and scalp.

Philip Kingsley Trichology is about complete wellness for your hair and scalp, from the inside out. Healthy hair does not happen overnight – it happens over time. And it is not just about the products you use – it is about how you look after yourself.

Products that specifically speak to the needs and demands of your own hair, whether you struggle with hair thinning or limp hair, will help your hairs to make the most of whichever stage they’re in.

You can identify your hair type by looking at the thickness of your individual hair strands:

  • If you have very thin hair strands that are typically natually straight and you struggle to get volume into your hair, you probably have Fine Hair.
  • If your hair feels strong, can sometimes be frizzy and dries natually with a wave, you probably have Medium Hair.
  • If your hair strands feels quite thick and you find you have a natural curl or coily hair you probably have Coarse Hair.

The are four stages of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen & Exogen. Each plays a vital role. The Anagen Phase is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed. The Catagen Phase signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair. The third stage of your natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing. The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out.
